White Plains Mouthguards for Children

If your children play basketball, soccer, football, or any other kind of contact sport that could cause an oral injury, we recommend bringing them in for a custom-fitted sports mouthguard. Kids who grind their teeth may also need a mouthguard to prevent damage. To learn more about mouthguards for children, schedule an appointment at Miles of Little Smiles today!

Sports Mouthguards

Sports mouthguards, also known as athletic mouthguards, are one of the most important pieces of protective equipment you can get for your child if they play contact sports. Even an accidental hit in a contact sport can cause serious damage if your child is not properly protected.

A custom-fitted athletic mouthguard from Miles of Little Smiles is the best option for your child. While you can get cheaper “boil-and-bite” or one-size-fits-all mouthguards, these are often bulky and uncomfortable, and can even interfere with proper speech or breathing.

A custom-built sports mouthguard from Miles of Little Smiles will ensure your child can speak and breathe properly, and protect their teeth and jaws from impact while playing sports. The ADA has estimated that a properly-fitted athletic mouthguard results in a 60x lower risk of serious oral injuries while playing sports.

Mouthguards for Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding (bruxism) can happen at any age, even to kids. Over time, untreated teeth grinding can result in premature wear and tear to the teeth, and even cause serious jaw issues like TMJ/TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder).

A nightguard is the best way to prevent damage to your child’s teeth if they are grinding their teeth at night. Your child’s nightguard will be made out of a durable plastic material that is custom-formed to their teeth. It will prevent direct tooth-to-tooth contact and alleviate premature tooth loss.

What Can I Expect From the Process?

Getting an athletic mouthguard or a nightguard is a very simple process, and can be done as part of any routine dental visit at Miles of Little Smiles in White Plains. Drs. Dee or Mila will simply take an impression of your child’s teeth with a putty material. These impressions will be used by a dental lab to create your child’s athletic mouthguard or a nightguard. It ensures a perfect fit and comfortable wear!

How Long Will My Child’s Mouthguard Last?

Both sports mouthguards and nightguards will last a long time with proper care. Professionally-made sports mouthguards usually last between 3-5 years. Nightguards will also usually last up to 5 years with proper care. You need to make sure that you or your child rinse and brush the mouthguard out between each use to prevent bacterial buildup.
